Basic Beat Jumbo Egg Shaker Egg shakers are a favorite in my classes, for all ages!!
I recommend you get the biggest size available. Babies will try to fit a whole egg shaker inside their mouths. So if these are too small it can actually be dangerous. I also recommend to buy a good brand, like Basic Beat, since some brands have had to recall theirs because the eggs have split in the middle and let all the really tiny beads out.
Baby Band Instrument Package A set of shakers that produce different sounds. Babies and toddlers love to shake these to the sound of music!
Smallest size Plastic Rainmaker This rainmaker is better for a baby. The medium and bigger sizes are not too fat for a baby to grasp but they can be too long and too heavy.
Twirly Whirly Rainmaker Rainmakers are great fun for children. They love turning them around and observing the beads pass from one side to the other making a pleasant and relaxing sound. Plastic rainmakers are sturdier and safer for young children.
Remo Kids Drum Remo has made a great selection of different sizes and styles of drums. Made with sturdy materials that last long, are capable of producing a more musical sound than most drums made for children.
Check out this collection of cd's. not only they have an awesome selection of songs, to the taste of children and parents, but the songs are sung by the original artists! yes! not those annoying covers with the lyrics twisted to (supposedly) cater the child's mind. Excellent!!! I checked out some from the public library, you should too!
after almost 6 months of silence, i am so ready to start making some music with my little friends.
baby umi is already 4 months, she has been healthy for most of the time (except for 3 very scary days at the hospital with rsv at 5 weeks!) and i can't wait to have her joining us in the pre-walkers class.
while away from the music garden classes, i have been teaching at a wonderful montessori school, the renaissance montessori academy. this school is located in laporte, in. is a small and relatively new school with a relaxed and welcoming environment for the children. the school goes from pre-school to 8th grade and i see them all for music, and spanish!!! it has been a wonderful experience. seeing the kids almost every week from september to june throws some very important hints on what are the most valuable and enriching experiences in exploring the role of music in childhood and teenagehood.
i love teaching music and i am so looking forward to working again with the families that come to the music garden classes. creating this space for little children to explore music has been one of the most rewarding jobs i've ever had.

Remember how I am always talking about "musical babbling" in class? Here is a little explanation I found in my readings, I hope it helps!
"As early as infancy, as children begin to discover their vocal capabilities, they are making musical sounds. Playfully, they begin to explore sounds with vowels and consonants that they have heard before, extending their duration, repeating them rhythmically and in rising and falling passages. Like the babbling that precedes speech, musical babbling is the vocalization that precedes the performance of melodies" (Moog, 1976).
Due to many questions from parents about what instruments would I recommend to buy for their children. I have started a list of favorite age-appropriate musical instruments. Most of these are instruments that I have had a chance to test either through the use they get my classes or at home by my son. I have placed a link to the store I have bought them from and a brief explanation of why I like each of them. Please feel free to email me or post any questions or comments on the blog about this list. I am always happy to assist you with how to foster music making at home with your little ones. Look for the list at the bottom of the left column under "Favorite Child-friendly Instruments." Click on the instrument's name! Happy Summer Session!
