The Music Garden:
Early Childhood Music Classes
Spring
Session I, 2008
This
child-centered music program is rooted on the research and method developed by
Dr. Gordon and his colleagues called “Music Learning Theory for the Newborn and
Young Children.” This method develops the newborn and toddler’s potential in
music and helps parents recognize and nurture the signs of their child's
musical development. The program presents a succession of activities throughout
the developmental stages of music learning to the children and their parents or
caregivers, creating a musical environment where children make music in its
most spontaneous and natural form. Ultimately, through singing, chanting and
movement and the appropriate sequence of activities, children take their first
steps toward the natural understanding and ownership of melody and rhythm.
Classes
are divided into three groups:
Pre-walkers
Through
singing, chanting and movement children are exposed to a wide variety of tonalities
and meters which help to build their musical vocabulary and stimulate their
cognitive development.
Walkers up to 3 years old
In
addition to singing and chanting the teacher and the parents facilitate and
model informal instrumental experiences and independent free movement
encouraging spontaneous musical responses at this stage of development.
3-5 years old
In
order to nurture the more purposeful musical and movement responses proper of
this stage we incorporate imaginative play and coordinated movement. Songs are
accompanied by games of imitation where children purposefully sing and chant
tonal and rhythmic patterns in coordination with breathing. It may explore
solfege and notation depending on the child’s musical readiness.
